String Lessons

(AGES FIVE AND UP)

Overview

String lessons at the Academy of Music offer the ultimate opportunity to explore or learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Lessons are designed to teach students the fundamentals of technique, ear training and more, using a variety of musical styles to enhance the learning experience.   Whether you are looking for a traditional musical experience, fiddle, country, or even rock influenced lessons, our instructors are ready to provide the best instruction available.

What’s the #1 reason to study the violin, viola, cello, and string bass at the Academy?‍

Our string instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student’s favorite type of music. Whether you’re playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the bass after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.

What styles of violin, viola, cello, and string bass do you teach?

We teach all styles, from classical to fiddle.

How qualified are your string instructors?

Our violin, viola, cell, string bass, and music instructors have received their education from prestigious institutions such as Vanderbilt University, Concordia, Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, Ithaca College, William and Mary, New York University, Rice University, and Colorado State University. Some have been educated here at home: Towson University, Morgan University, The University of Maryland at College Park, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Howard Community College. We are your neighbors! Some of our teachers have degrees from overseas, and many have toured the US and internationally, performed with stars and recording artists. Our instructors bring decades of professional performance and teaching experience to your lessons.

What will I learn from violin, viola, cello or string bass lessons at the Academy?

Strings students LOVE our teachers! Beginners? We teach children as young as 3 and 4 years old. Here in Howard County Schools, kids may start Instrumental Music in the 3rd grade, with violin, viola, cello or bass. Many of our new students have never touched a violin. We will help you find the right size, and then to go on to excel in strings. Bring your school book to lessons. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson presents a new technical challenges or theory concept. With the laser-focus and kind guidance of our personalized instruction, many of our students earn placement in various accelerated music programs, on County and State levels.

Do I need to purchase a violin, viola, cello or string bass to learn the instrument?

Yes, to practice at home, you will need to have an instrument available. However, you do not need to purchase an instrument as we have a rental program here at the Maryland Music Academy.
